Real estate India - 12 reasons why home owners sell their homes and move on

reasons for selling home
Get on to any real estate portal in India and you will see thousands of homes on sale in the resale section. Times have changed for sure. If you discuss home selling with your grandfather, you will be surprised to know that such a thought can never be understood by him. Yet, today, more and more people sell their homes. But why? We asked some folks around and came up with some good reasons:

1) Home is too small: The seller may have had a small budget or other constraints which could have made him choose a small home. He may have moved up in life and is probably looking at moving into a larger home.

2) Upgrade: Some of us have great aspirations when it comes to our homes. The seller might want to upgrade to a grander, bigger home in a posh locality.

3) Rectify an old mistake made in home buying: The seller and her/ his family may feel that the home they currently live in may have been a bad choice to start with. The design may not be according to their taste. The kitchen garden may be too small. The Vaastu may not be right according to their family vaastu dude!

4) Change in job: The seller may be moving to another city or country. That could be a good reason to pull up roots and move! Thus the sale.

5) Change in relationship status (Yup, same as the little red heart we see on Facebook): There may be a marriage on the cards and the need for a bigger and better home. On the contrary, there may have been a break up and the home may be too big to sustain on a single person's income or there could be memories associated with the home which the seller might want to leave behind.

6) Local/ neighbourhood changes: The neighbourhood may have changed over the years. Crime could have gone up (Think Salt Lake City, Kolkata lately) and the seller may have decided to move to a safer locality.

7) Kids grew up and moved out: The kids have grown up and left. The home is too big for the old couple now. Or they have a small, retirement home built among the hills of north India.

8) See family more often: Grandparents/ parents may want to move closer to where the children live. That is all they have left anyway, right?

9) See family less often: Fractured families do well with a little distance put between them to heal the scars. That could be a reason.

10) Medical problems: There may be a need to visit the hospital often. Knee and other limb problems could be prohibiting the use of staircases.

11) Home improvement premium: We know of a few folks who buy an old home, then spend a few years doing it up and bringing it to perfection. Once its fully done and they have nothing left to do, they may want to move in to another such project, selling the old home. Such a home would be a treasure to own.

12) Money money money: Some home owners can't stand the fact their home is worth all that money because that money is not in their pocket. Think South Mumbai. These people would prefer to stare at their passbook savings rather than stare at four walls with empty pockets. They. Just. Want. The. Money.

There could be more reasons added to that list. Have you come across one? Leave your feedback in the comment box below. We would be happy to know!
