World's largest air filter being built in Kolkata!

The Air Sieve - The world's largest air filter in Kolkata
The 'Air Sieve' being finished in Kolkata!
While on one of our field trips, which are mostly yielding nothing these days, we stumbled upon the 'Air Sieve', Kolkata's answer to the global problem of polluted city air!

Spanning over two hundred thousand square feet of built up area, Kolkata's Air Sieve can clean up from 30% to up to 90% of all suspended particles in the air, depending on the weather, the wind speed and humidity.

The Air Sieve Project:

When the rest of the world was burning out their brains' embedded processors, the folks of Kolkata secretly commissioned and built this ambitious project right under their noses and no one even got a whiff.

"We believe in applications and not mere concepts and nice looking project designs. The Air Sieve in Kolkata is a living and 'breathing' example of our company's strong delivery values and the great vision of the citizens of the city of joy. We are proud to be the guys who have built this project. The Air Sieve is already at work and by the time it's fully operational before the 2013 Durga Pujas, all of Kolkata shall feel the difference", said CAO (Chief Air Officer), RogerAir, the firm behind the Air Sieve concept and execution.

The Kolkata Air Sieve Technology:

Air flow and impurity retention in the Air Sieve
Kolkata's history creating air purification project, the Air Sieve uses a pretty cave man time technology but it seems simple prehistoric science has the answers to many of our complex problems. In the technical diagram released by RogerAir, they show us how small undulations on the Air Sieve's large floor plates arrest different kind of particles that pollute the air we breathe.

Once operational, the Air Sieve shall be able to purify 65 to 70 percent of all suspended particles in the air that passes through this humongous sieve. There is also the huge advantage of zero energy consumption. Those are two reasons for all of us to sigh a breath of relief.

"The Air Sieve is a zero energy consumption device. It uses no power at all. In fact they are toying with the idea of trying to generate some electricity by harnessing the wind power at Air Sieve's disposal. This can keep the entire building running without any help from a power company. The power supply company is also relieved because they only have enough bandwidth to choose between supplying power or building malls. And in India, building malls always wins.

Each average day, the Air Sieve can produce enough power to illuminate the whole building, power the building's lifts and also keep the office air conditioners and coffee machines running. For people who want tea, a tie up with the local shanty should keep things working like wind chimes.

The Way Ahead for Air Sieves

With cutting edge technology that is time tested for over a hundred thousand years, the possibilities are limitless. Once this project is completed, there are plans for 8 more Air Sieves in and around Kolkata. The State Govt. has already acquired land for these giant filters, even if that meant keeping a few hundred other projects on hold.

Revenues for the Air Sieve shall come from a Breathing Tax that the authorities are mulling over. The debate is to get a fix on how much area around each Air Sieve should be brought under Breathing Tax. Major city roads that pass by an Air Sieve shall also have a toll on all vehicles using the stretch and breathing pure air. Cycle Rickshaw unions are not too happy as their toll rates are the highest because they shall be using lung power most. "All this is subject to approvals and everyone's interests shall be kept in mind while rolling out the Breathing Tax structure", said an official who was recovering from a respiratory infection.

Interestingly the city's cops are also seriously eyeing the Air Sieve for alternate uses. We were a bit baffled but when we cajoled a resource deep inside the Police department, he almost blurted out that they were thinking about how flying threats like Pterodactyls and MIGs with failed engines could be arrested mid-flight by the Air Sieve, saving thousands of lives.

We shall keep you updated.

  1. Great information. Thanks for sharing.
As per the increase in air pollution we need to have proper air purifier. Last i purchased an air purifier of Panasonic. This was the best air purifier in India of its time. It offers more advance features to clean air.
