A used S Class for just 5000 Pounds? What about your home? 
Yes, this is a real estate blog. And yes, this is a real estate post. No two ways about that. The topic is a tricky one no doubt but there is a reason for it to be worded like that. And a very prominent one at that. Let us explain.

We are all Discovery Turbo nuts at the IREFD office. And when we get time, that is all we watch. In the latest episode of Fifth Gear, the bloke at the show went around UK looking for great used cars and found a Mercedes Benz S Class for 5000 Pounds. Yes, you read that right. We would also like to add that while buying one such used S Class for 5 grand, check the area behind the engine bay where there is a rain water drain. With time, these drain systems tend to clog up with dirt and let the rain water run into the cabin, destroying the floor carpet near the driver's and the passenger's feet area. A close inspection there should tell you about the car's health. Other than that bit, most of the car is bullet proof and will last you years if not decades.

In comparison to that, a brand new Chevrolet Beat, exactly similar to the one your mom in law adores back in India, costs 7000 pounds! But why?

You see this is the tragedy with technology and mass production. A Chevy Beat is easier to drive, much cheaper to run and maintain, and way easier to park than the moving 5 star hotel from Benz. The general public, effed to kingdom come with inflation, taxes and quarterly small scale recessions cannot afford such a 'waste' and thus, arguably the best car manufactured in the world when it was, the Mercedes S Class today is a full 2 grand cheaper than a darn Beat...



Now transport the same theory to your home. Or your property investment. With hundreds buildings offering thousands of apartments, mass production is certainly in. 20 years ago buildings had no elevators and it was fine. Ditto the car park. Today, one cannot imagine living on the second floor without an elevator. A car park is more important than the kitchen for all you know. A stately 3 BHK apartment with huge bedrooms and non existent super built loading built 20 years ago will cost half as much as a 3 BHK apartment built today despite having matchbox sized rooms and a super built up loading of 35%!

Get the drift mate? With time, tastes change, needs change, energy efficiency needs change and oh yeah, even the climate of a place changes, changing with it, the way people live. Do you think your mass produced 3 BHK apartment is going to attract buyers after 20 years? You think it will have that appeal? Don't worry, we know the 'God stopped making land a long time ago' theory. If in doubt, try and visiting an apartment complex that is 20 years old and you will know, and we are not even talking Mercedes quality. Your average Ram Shyam Buildcon constructed towers of luxury could er, not be the best place to live in then. We could not put such a startling fact in a simpler way.
